TECH TIPS Checking Cartridge We suggest that you make a general test to determine if your cartridge is defective. Turn the phono ON with volume fully up. Touch the wires connecting the cartridge to the tone arm. You should hear a loud hum through the speaker. This indicates the amplifier is operative. Next, peck on the cartridge and rub your finger across the needle. You should hear noise through your speaker. If so, your cartridge is okay. We do pre-check all cartridges on our tester before rebuilding and we will advise if cartridge does work properly before rebuilding. Test For Good Idler Turn on the phono so the turntable is spinning freely. Hold your thumb against the edge of spinning turntable at the different speeds to see if there is very much torque or if you can stop the turntable too easily. Next, go to the various speeds and push or select the REJECT to see if the tonearm and the turntable go through their motion freely and either DOES NOT slow up in the process. You can also remove the turntable and check the idler and turrets for hardness and glazing.
